Why Move the Machine
Early in my career, I was part of an executive team working through a significant organisational challenge. A clear directive had come from senior leadership — act on a diversity initiative for the benefit of a specific group of people.
Site leadership didn't act. They pushed back. Made excuses. Delayed. And ultimately refused.
It didn't matter that the directive came from the top. It didn't matter that the policy was clear, the imperative was real, and the request was right. When the local culture was misaligned, it won. Every time.
Sitting across from a regional leader making excuses, I asked a simple question: "If this was your daughter, would you allow this to happen?"
That moment crystallised something I have never forgotten. Strategy without cultural alignment is theatre. Policies without people who believe in them are paper. Real change requires the entire ecosystem to move together — in the same direction, at the same time.
Years later, in a completely unrelated conversation, I gave a simple instruction about a washing machine: "Move the machine."
And just like that, the business had its name.
